New Book, Homes & Courtyards,
Explores Recent Architectural Innovations
in Outdoor-Indoor Living

Award-winning California architect Bassenian/Lagoni celebrates 28 beautifully designed homes that connect outdoors with indoors.

Newport Beach, Calif. (December 6, 2007) Homes & Courtyards, the third and most recent publication from California-based Bassenian/Lagoni Architects, explores the latest major trend in new-home design in the United States: the integration of indoor and outdoor living. The 160-page coffee table book is intended as a planner, design guide and wish book for residential architects, designers and their clientele.

Subtitled 28 Beautifully Designed Homes for Outdoor Living, the newest Bassenian/Lagoni book takes readers on an in-depth photographic and narrative tour of 23 new homes in communities exhibiting exceptional indoor/outdoor relationships. Homes & Courtyards also offers a peek at five other, soon-to-be-completed communities worldwide that demonstrate this same sense of connectivity, as Chairman and CEO Aram Bassenian, AIA, describes it.

Aram Bassenian, author of Homes & Courtyards: 28 Homes for Outdoor Living and chairman and chief executive officer of one of the countrys largest residential architecture firms, Bassenian/Lagoni Architects in Newport Beach, California. Aram Bassenian has spent more than three decades defining how Americans live.

...continued from above

While the American home increasingly functions as a refuge from the frenetic pace of the workaday world, Americans want to do more than simply stay inside our homes, Bassenian comments.

We also want a sense of connectivity to the surrounding land. As a consequence, the veranda, the central courtyard, the patio, the garden have all become vital elements at the core of home design. The best designs blend inside with outside in an inventive way that enhances our daily enjoyment of both.

Offering dozens of stunning photographs, floor plans, and site layouts, plus descriptive text, Home & Courtyards celebrates a wide assortment of housing styles and types. Included are:

  • a Tuscan-inspired, ocean-view home in Newport Coast, Calif.;
  • a formal Italian villa in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.;
  • two quintessential courtyard homes in Indian Wells, Calif.;
  • a wine country contemporary residence in Paso Robles, Calif.
  • a metal-roofed, Old Florida home in Tampa Bay;
  • a front-porch seaboard colonial in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.

In addition, Elements of Design sections, strategically placed throughout the book, allow readers to explore the architectural details and design processes that make these showcase homes and their outdoor areas so powerful.

Bassenian/Lagoni has published two other books that documented the changing face of American housing over the past decade: Pure California and Tuscan and Andalusian Reflections. Homes & Courtyards, which lists for $34.95 in the United States and $49.95 in Canada, is available at major book retailers and on Amazon.com.
